What is Medical Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the name of one type of cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant. CBD and other cannabinoids attach themselves to specific receptors in the human body to produce effects on the nervous system and the immune system, among others.

CBD and THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a well-known cannabinoid that stimulates receptors in the brain and produces significant psychoactive effects. CBD has been shown to possess many of the same therapeutic effects as THC without the psychoactive effects, making it safer for medical use.

CBD can be used alone or combined with THC. Research shows that THC is more effective when combined with CBD because of the decrease in potential adverse effects such as psychoactive activity.

MedPharm Iowa formulates different cannabidiol medications using a combination of cannabidiol and THC at four main dosing levels:

  • Elevated THC
  • Low THC
  • 1:1 ratio of THC/CBD
  • Elevated CBD

Potential Health Benefits of CBD, THC and Other Cannabinoids

According to research, the way CBD and other cannabinoids act in the body may have therapeutically useful effects on patients, including:

  • Anti-Seizure
  • Antioxidant
  • Neuroprotective
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Analgesic
  • Anti-tumor
  • Anti-psychotic
  • Anti-anxiety
